It all started back in 1996 on January the 10th. That was the first time that Down Home Bluegrass aired at WNVA. The original DJ was, of course, Fred Necessary. Fred saw a need to promote the traditional bluegrass in an area where a lot of pickin’ originated from. His roots were from Wise County and that’s the music that he had always been acquainted with. Down through the years, there were several people that helped Fred with the show. There was Raymond Roberts, Vic Collier, Tom McConnel, Ross Bolling, Cecil Roberts and George Lewis to name a few. Later on, Tony Roberts came on board and after a short time attending to his job, he returned and has been here ever since. The last addition to Down Home Bluegrass has been Andy Shepard and his little biscuit burner, Kathy. Kathy has manned the phone lines and Andy has stepped up to the DJ duties. These are the ones that make up your Down Home Bluegrass show. Fred and his wife Janet make their home in Norton Virginia. Their son, Rusty is employed at the University of Virginia’s College at Wise. Fred has the heart to play all types of Bluegrass and the soul to deliver that lonesome sound to his listeners. His appreciation to all of their loyal fans that call each week is what keeps him going. He is most thankful for the wonderful sponsors that make Down Home Bluegrass possible each and every week. Does he have any thoughts of slowing down and taking some time off? According to Fred, he says he will slow down when the phone stops ringing and after sitting in with the guys (and girl) I can say that doesn’t look like it will happen any time soon. Tune in each week for the best in bluegrass and bluegrass gospel right here on the number one station in the mountains, WNVA and Down Home Bluegrass. They will take you down home right there in your living room!
